Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Spring Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible cable and drum assemblies for most residential models in Spring, TX, with typical installed pricing running $130-$250. Most replacements are completed in a single visit because our trucks carry the common Clopay drum sizes and cable lengths for 7-foot and 8-foot doors. If your door is hanging crooked, making a grinding noise, or one side is rising faster than the other, the cable or drum is usually the culprit.

Homeowners in Spring usually notice the problem during the first cycle of the morning. The door jams halfway, or you spot a frayed cable dangling beside the bottom bracket. In neighborhoods like Gleannloch Farms and along Rayford Road, we see accelerated wear from humidity and the occasional hard freeze that throws tension out of balance.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses several drum designs across their residential lines, and matching the correct one matters. The Reserve Wood and Canyon Ridge collections typically run 400-8 or 400-12 standard-lift drums for 7-foot and 8-foot doors. The Gallery and Classic steel lines often use the same, but Clopay’s Coachman and Grand Harbor carriage-house doors sometimes ship with low-headroom or vertical-lift drum configurations that are not interchangeable. Check the sticker on the interior panel or the etched part number on the drum itself, usually visible once you release tension and inspect the torsion tube.

We carry OEM-grade Clopay drums and cables from our supplier, plus quality aftermarket equivalents that meet the same 1/8-inch or 3/32-inch cable diameter specs and 12-gauge or 14-gauge drum wall thickness. For doors installed before 2010, watch for the older Clopay drum hub design with the narrower keyway. That part is obsolete from Clopay, but we stock the compatible aftermarket version that fits without modifying the shaft. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has slipped off the drum or frayed enough to stretch unevenly. The drum groove may also be worn, letting the cable seat deeper on one side than the other. We check both, because replacing only the cable on a scored drum buys you a few months at best.
  • A loud grinding or clicking sound from the header area. The cable is not tracking cleanly in the drum grooves. On Clopay doors with nylon-coated cables, the coating can bunch and harden, especially after Texas heat cycles, creating a clicking that mimics a roller problem.
  • The door rises fast on one side and stalls on the other. This usually means one cable has snapped or the drum set screw has loosened, letting the drum spin independently on the shaft. It is a high-tension situation. Do not operate the door.
  • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Clopay cables in Spring typically last 8-12 years, but proximity to the coast and our humidity swings can push that toward the lower end. We replace the pair even if only one shows wear, because the matched set carries balanced load.
  • The cable has unwound completely and is dangling loose. This points to drum failure, not just cable fatigue. The drum flanges can crack at the hub from years of torque, especially on heavier Clopay insulated doors in the 500-series and up.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Spring, TX
Cable & Drum Replacement (standard lift, single door) $130-$250
Low-headroom or vertical-lift drum upgrade Add $40-$80
Both cables + both drums (full assembly) $180-$340

The range depends on door height, drum type, and whether the torsion spring needs rebalancing after we reset tension. We quote the flat price before touching a tool. That quote covers parts, labor, disposal of the old assembly, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the door does not run true and quiet when we leave, we come back at no charge. No paperwork battle. No surprises on the bill.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cable for fraying and check whether the drum set screws are tight with the door in the down position. Use a flashlight, not your fingers near the cable.

What you should not do: release torsion spring tension, remove a drum from the shaft, or attempt to wind a new cable onto the drum yourself. These are under hundreds of pounds of load. A slipping wrench or miscounted turn can cause serious injury. We have been called to Spring homes where a DIY attempt bent the track or damaged the torsion tube, turning a $200 job into a $600 repair.

Our technicians arrive with the right drums, cables, and winding bars already on the truck. Most Clopay cable and drum replacements in Spring finish in under 90 minutes. Quote first, wrench second. Call (936) 280-5668.
